Call to Action: Illuminating Unconditional Presence

In my mid-thirties, I sensed a need for greater meaning and direction in my life. I sought something more, yet was unclear about how to find it or what it entailed. A close friend told me about Maria, a healer she had seen for help with physical and spiritual challenges. Something inside pushed me to make an appointment immediately. I felt a sense of inner calm doing this, as if an unclear path ahead was being illuminated in some way. When I entered Maria’s home, I knew I was in the right place at the right time. I sensed peace, stillness, and clarity throughout my being. This began a journey that has brought continuous deposits to my energy bank accounts, enhanced my stress hardiness, and taught me much about unconditional presence and Self-healing.

Maria described her nursing background. She had directed a hospital-based cardiac intensive care unit and had worked in hospice, psychiatric, and home-care settings. She did not consider herself a healer. She worked with various approaches to help individuals create balance, wholeness, and well-being within themselves. When Maria asked why I came, I blurted out “I need more balance in my life,” and tears unexpectedly flowed.

Maria keenly listened to my description of the hectic, over-scheduled life I was leading: raising children; running a house-hold; being a wife and mother; teaching yoga; maintaining a spiritual practice; being of service; and trying to find greater meaning and purpose in life. The remainder of our session took place in an adjoining room. During the session I felt as if I was floating on water, as Maria completed our session in sacred silence.

Because I was healthy and strong physically, I rarely saw Maria for what I call “horizontal illness” – times when I was horizontal, in a bed or hospital, with health problems. I could also ignore or briefly work through “vertical illness” – times when I walked upright through my day, with intermittent headaches, low back pain, gastrointestinal problems, or fatigue. However, it was through sessions with Maria that I began to recognize the disconnect from my heart and soul, and how depleted my energy bank accounts were.

Maria’s simple, concise words helped me realize how cut off I was from my heart and authentic Self, especially when I came late to sessions and apologized for getting stuck at my office. Her consistent comment was, “Don’t apologize to me, apologize to yourself.” Her words highlighted the absence of check-in and restorative time with my authentic Self – in nature, during yoga and meditation, or in moments of sacred, loving connection with others.

I have continued with monthly visits to Maria for more than thirty-five years. We have walked side by side through wondrous as well as difficult periods. During my marital separations, physical therapy school, surgeries, and family illness or loss, Maria’s insight, presence, and sense of humor supported my ability to move from fear to faith, from disturbance to inner peace, and from blame and judgment to compassion. Maria lives and manifests her spirituality through unconditional, grace-filled presence.
